Interesting Laws

Editor's comments: The following is contributed by Jia Hui (spelling police*)

1) In Massachusetts, it's against the law to put tomatoes in clam
chowder.

2) In Kentucky, there's a law that says a person has to take a bath at
least
once a year.

3) In the state of Colorado,if your cat goes loose outside, it has to
wear a
tail light.

4) In Virginia, the law says that chickens cannot lay eggs before 8.00
a.m
and must be done before 4.00 p.m

5) In North Dakota, it is illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your
shoes and socks on.

6) In North Carolina, it is against the law for dogs and cats to fight.

7) In Ohio, it is illegal to fish for whales on Sundays.

8) In Arkansas, it is against the law to mispronounce the name of the
state.
( Just in case you go there someday, remember, it's pronounced
Ar-kan-SAW!)

Silly Animal Facts

Ostriches are often not taken seriously. They can run faster than horses, and the males can roar like lions.

Seals used for their fur get extremely sick when taken aboard ships.

Sloths take two weeks to digest their food.

Guinea pigs and rabbits can't sweat.

On average, dogs have better eyesight than humans, although not as colorful.

The duckbill platypus can store as many as six hundred worms in the pouches of its cheeks.

The lifespan of a squirrel is about nine years.

Gorillas sleep as much as fourteen hours per day.

Jellyfish like salt water. A rainy season often reduces the jellyfish population by putting more fresh water into normally salty waters where they live.

The female lion does ninety percent of the hunting.

You can tell the sex of a horse by its teeth. Most males have 40, females have 36.

Traffic Lights

Editor's comment: As inspired by my site picture above of an ancient CAR...

Traffic lights were used before the advent of the motorcar. In 1868, a lantern with red and green signals was used at a London intersection to control the flow of horse buggies and pedestrians.

When motorcars were introduced to the US in the late 1890s, Police Officer William Potts used railroad signals for street traffic, adding the amber light. His electric traffic lights were installed in 1920 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. They were manually controlled. The first automatic traffic light was invented later in 1920 by Garrett Morgan and first used in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Isn't it amazing that, after all these years, the only thing that can stop a 30-ton truck is a traffic light? Some freight (sorry... "food") for thought.

Irony Spinach?

Everyone knows that spinach is loaded in iron and makes you stronger - Just look what it has done for Popeye.  Well, Popeye was wrong.  So were all of those parents that stuffed it down their kids' throats.  In reality, spinach has no more iron in it than any other vegetable.  This spinach misconception dates back to the 1950's when a food analyst made an error while calculating the iron in spinach.  His decimal place was off by one place, suggesting that spinach had ten times as much iron content than it really did.

Editor's comment: Although I'm no big fan of spinach, I take lots of its leafy cousins! (Special hint to those who are completely 'no-green' in diet!)

Birth Days

Do you have a lucky day? Is it today your perhaps tomorrow? Well, any day can be.

If you were...
Born on a SUNDAY
Born on the first day of the week, you probably have an optimistic outlook on life. It is said that your luck, generally good, will be even better if you wear gold. Sunday is also a lucky day for people born under the sign of Leo.

Born on a MONDAY
Silver charms, especially crescents, will bring you luck if you were born on a Monday. You are likely to have an active imagination, and people find you attractive.

Born on a TUESDAY
You will find luck in wearing red if your birth date was on a Tuesday. You are enthusiastic about life and have a great influence over others. If you were born under the signs of Aeries or Scorpio, Tuesday is your lucky day.

Born on a WEDNESDAY
If you were born in the middle of the week, blue is your lucky color. You get along extremely well with all kinds of people. If your birth date is in the sign of Aquarius, Gemini, or Virgo, Wednesday is your lucky day.

Born on a THURSDAY
A Thursday baby will grow up with an overpowering love of travel and the adventure of discovering new places. When you go, be sure to have a charm for good luck on your journey. People born under the sign of Sagittarius can expect good luck to come their way on Thursday.

Born on a FRIDAY
If you were born on a Friday, you will be very lucky in human relationships. Friday is among the luckiest of all days, considered great for people born under four different astrological signs: Cancer, Libra, Pisces and Taurus. Possibly that is why so many agree with the expression, "Thank God it's Friday!"

Born on a SATURDAY
Born on a Saturday, you are likely to be a workaholic. But you don't mind. You know that hard work pays off. It is a lucky day for Capricorns.

Birthday Problem

How many people do you need in a group to ensure at least a 50 percent probability that 2 people in the group share a birthday? 30? 60? 90? 180? 360?

Surprisingly, the answer is only 23 people to have at least a 50 percent chance of a match. This goes up to 70 percent for 30 people, 90 percent for 41 people, 95 percent for 47 people. With 57 people there is better than a 99 percent chance of a birthday match!

6 Peace, with 41 girls, has 3 girls who were born on national day, 2 on 3 Sept... Anymore?
